Melbourne's western suburbs run from the old river and port suburbs of Footscray and Williamstown, out across flat volcanic plains to Melton, and down the bay to Altona, Point Cook and Werribee. The housing changes as you go: Victorian streets and post-war brick close to the city, 1970s tile roofs in the middle ring, and estates built since the late 1990s on the edge. What kinds of roofs will you find in the west?
The age of a suburb tells you most of what you need to know about its roofs. Footscray and Williamstown were built up in the nineteenth century, and Sunshine in the early twentieth, so pre-war homes with terracotta tiles or corrugated metal are common there. Altona, Hoppers Crossing and Melton filled out between the post-war years and the 1980s, the era of brick veneer and concrete tiles. Point Cook, Tarneit and Caroline Springs date from the late 1990s onward, and their estates mostly carry Colorbond or concrete tiles.
Bay air, open plains and what they do to a roof
Williamstown, Altona and Point Cook all sit on Port Phillip. Bayside air is hard on unpainted steel, so gutters, valleys and screw heads near the water deserve a closer look, and new metal roofing there should be Colorbond Ultra, the grade for coastal homes. Inland, suburbs such as Melton and Tarneit are built on flat, open plains. Street trees in the newer estates are still young, so gutters collect dust and grit more than leaves. In older suburbs with established trees, leaves and bark are the main load.
