What is repointing and why does ridge capping fail?
Ridge capping sits on a bed of mortar and is sealed with pointing. Old rigid pointing cracks as the roof expands and contracts through Melbourne summers and winters, then breaks away. Once it is gone, the capping loosens and water tracks under the ridge.
Re-bedding versus repointing: what your roof needs
If the mortar bed underneath is sound, repointing alone will do. If the bed has crumbled or the caps have dropped, we re-bed first and then repoint. We tell you which on inspection, with photos.
