Brick, weatherboard and new builds: three kinds of roof in Reservoir
The suburb took its name from the water storages first built here in 1863, and it became a suburb in its own right around 1921. The established homes are standard brick or weatherboard, and you will see a lot of tiled roofs on them, often terracotta on the earlier houses and concrete on the later ones. Timber-framed weatherboard houses tend to move a little with the seasons, and that movement cracks rigid mortar along the ridges. Flexible pointing copes with it far better.
Newer developments in Reservoir are taking the place of some older houses, and these commonly have Colorbond or modern concrete tile roofs. They need washing and clear gutters more than anything else. Around Edwardes Lake Park and along the Merri Creek and Darebin Creek trails, mature trees add to the leaf load. I have a weatherboard house in Reservoir with a tiled roof. Why does the ridge pointing keep cracking?
